These octal buffers and line drivers are designed to have theperformance of the 'HCT240 and a pinout with inputs and outputs onopposite sides of the package. This arrangement greatly facilitatesprinted circuit board layout.

The 3-state control gate is a 2-input NOR. If either output-enable( or) input is high, all eight outputsare in the high-impedance state. The 'HCT540 provide inverted data atthe outputs.

The SN54HCT540 is characterized for operation over the fullmilitary temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. TheSN74HCT540 is characterized for operation from -40°C to85°C.
