Application Report Abstract

GUIDELINES FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT EFFICIENCY ON THE TMS320C6000 VELOCITI ARCHI

The current generation of Texas Instruments (TIä) TMS320C6x (C6x) digital signal processors (DSPs) is 100X more powerful than DSPs available 15 years ago. As DSP capability has increased, product designers have created more complex software applications. Three years ago a typical wireless application had 6,000 (100 Kbytes) lines of C code - today the typical application has 31,000 (500Kbytes) lines of C code and may to grow to 250,000,000 (4MB) lines of C code within three years. Responding to the growing complexity and size of code embedded in our DSPs and the desire of our clients to create and reuse code efficiently, Texas Instruments is developing software development tools that support increasingly efficient programming environments.

This white paper focuses on the most efficient programming and reuse techniques to use when developing the C6x VelociTI DSP. Programming guidelines described in this paper recommend an efficient C6x programming technique and offer references for additional detail. A code reuse efficiency diagram and development flow chart are included to aid understanding.
