TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FORMS STORAGE PRODUCTS GROUP TO OPTIMIZE ITS MASS STORAGE RESOURCES

Design, process, and systems expertise combined to address the total electronics solution for storage products from preamplifier and read channel signal processing to embedded processor solutions for servo/spindle and interface controllers.

TUSTIN, CA, September 23, 1997 The Storage Products Group has been created within Texas Instruments to form a single entity serving the total electronics needs of mass storage customers worldwide.

The new organization includes the entire operation of Silicon Systems, the mass storage business efforts of Texas Instruments, and the systems and software capabilities of Intersect Technologies Inc. ITI was acquired by Texas Instruments in March 1997.

Revenues from the new Storage Products Group are expected to exceed $1.2 billion in 1997, making it the largest supplier of semiconductor solutions to the mass storage market segment. Its headquarters are located in Tustin, CA, home of Silicon Systems.

"With this initiative, we are fully consolidating the production support resources including, marketing, sales, development, and engineering of all our mass storage-focused operations worldwide," said Rick Goerner, the group's president and chief operating officer.

"Our goal is to create a cohesive organization that will align with our customers and allow them to utilize our capabilities for their next generation products. This provides them ready access to the exciting new component and systems technologies contained within the Storage Products Group," Goerner added.

The group is organized into two operational arms, representing the major electronic disciplines required within a storage drive: Mass Storage Mixed Signal Products, under Jeff Staszak; and Mass Storage Digital Products, under Joe O'Hare.

Product and test development activities are consolidated under Greg Winner, while quality and technology development are under John Petersen. Previously consolidated divisions include marketing, under Russ Garcia and sales, under Mark Denissen. With this formation of the Storage Products Group, I am more confident than ever that we are positioned to meet the electronics challenges of the mass storage industry successfully for years to come, Goerner affirmed.

The Storage Products Group serves the mass storage market through the combined resources of Silicon Systems, Intersect Technologies and Texas Instruments. It provides advanced semiconductors for high performance, desktop and mobile hard disk drives as well as removable drives. Its industry-leading read channels and DSP solutions are complemented by its innovative servo/spindle, interface, preamp and ASIC solutions. These solutions are designed and manufactured for hard disk drives, tape drives, high density floppy disk drives, optical disk drives and DVD.
