SILICON SYSTEMS ADDS FET FUNCTIONS IN NEW SERVO/SPINDLE CONTROLLER DESIGNED FOR DESKTOP DISK DRIVES

Single-Chip Solution Believed the Most Advanced Control IC that Meets Stringent Cost Targets for High-Volume Consumer Desktop Computers

TUSTIN, CA, March, 19, 1997 -- Silicon Systems, a Texas Instruments Company, today introduced an advanced single-chip semiconductor for voice coil actuator and 3-phase motor control for one-to-three platter, 12-V disk drives used in desktop computers.

The new servo/spindle driver IC, designated the 32H6900, is fabricated using Silicon Systems advanced 0.8" BiCMOS process and includes on-chip power control to eliminate the need for external FET components.

"Our new 32H6900 is our latest mixed-signal, mixed-technology (analog/digital/power) chip aimed specifically at reducing drive electronics costs by integrating more and more functionality on a single device," said Paul Wassenberg, marketing manager for servo/spindle products. "We believe this is the most advanced servo/spindle control IC available that meets the cost envelope for desktop disk drive applications."

The 32H6900 includes a Class AB voice coil actuator designed for use with 12-V supplies. Maximum on-resistance is just 1.75 Ohms for efficient operation. An automatic digitally-programmable head retraction feature with brake delay timing is provided, to protect the drive from data modification or loss during voltage faults.

The integral spindle drive can accommodate a 1.2-A, 12-V 3-phase motor, with internal flyback protection and pulse wave modulation during run and start for smooth acceleration. A precision on-chip current sensor is provided for motor control, and an integral phase-locked-loop is provided for high jitter immunity.

The 32H6900 includes Silicon Systems standard serial port for direct input of digital data to the registers used to control all set-points -- an exceptional level of programmability for such a device. A negative power supply is also provided on-chip for use with MR preamplifiers.

The new 32H6900 is packaged in a 64-lead TQFP that has been thermally enhanced for higher reliability. An analog output proportional to junction temperature is provided to facilitate automatic over-temperature shutdown. The new servo/spindle driver costs $4.00 each in 1,000 quantity, and is available off-the-shelf.

Silicon Systems, Inc., the mass storage subsidiary of Texas Instruments Incorporated, provides advanced semiconductor solutions for hard disk drives, tape drives, high density floppy disk drives, and optical disk drives. Silicon Systems innovations in read channels, controllers and preamps are complemented by TI's leadership in DSP solutions and global semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
