SILICON SYSTEMS NEW SECTOR SERVO
DEMODULATOR EXPANDS HARD DISK DRIVE DESIGN LIFE CYCLE TUSTIN, CA, June 10, 1996 Silicon Systems new 32H6522 6-burst Sector Servo Demodulator IC improves the positioning accuracy of hard disk drive servo positioning systems. Servo designs using the 32H6522 can achieve much higher track densities to accommodate MR heads and boost overall drive capacity without further modification. As the leader in ICs for hard disk drives, we are always looking for ways to help customers extend the life of their HDD designs by developing new low-cost performance enhancements, said Mike Holt, product planning and development manager for servo/spindle and interface controller products at Silicon Systems Storage Products Division. Our new 32H6522 servo demodulator is a great example of that, allowing customers to increase servo positioning accuracy and take full advantage of the narrower recording track widths of advanced MR heads to dramatically increase drive capacity. In operation, the 32H6522 accepts multiphase analog differential- burst-encoded position error signals from a read channel IC, performs an area integration and comparison, and presents the result in digital bit-serial format to a digital servo timing controller or DSP. From three to six consecutive servo bursts can be captured at any time, allowing designers to optimally trade off positioning accuracy with servo burst over head. Two additional auxiliary analog input channels are provided for other functions like calculating digitized performance metrics for a read channel. The new 32H6522 IC includes an area regulating AGC loop, a single area detector, and a 10-bit, 1.2-µs A/D converter for digitizing burst areas. An analog multiplexer directs the burst area information to one of six track and hold circuits with an on-chip hold capacitor for temporary storage. The 32H6522 uses a single capacitor for servo burst area detection and independent track and hold circuits. Using a single area detection capacitor reduces servo channel mismatch. Fabricated in Silicon Systems standard 1.0 BiCMOS process, the 32H6522 is available in a standard 32-pin TQFP and is quoted at $4.00 (quantity = 1,000). Samples are available off-the-shelf, with first volume deliveries scheduled for June 1996. Silicon Systems, a TDK Group company, is a leader in the design and manufacture of advanced application-specific, mixed-signal integrated circuits for the data storage and communications markets |
