TMS320C54x XDS510/XDS510WS

The TMS320 Extended Development Systems (XDSs) are powerful, full-speed emulators used for system-level integration and debug. TI provides the world's first in-system scan-based emulators.

TI provides C54x emulation systems for both PC and SPARC systems:

XDS510: a PC version consisting of a half-size AT board and a JTAG emulation cable.
XDS510WS: a SPARC version consisting of an external controller box, a SCSI cable, a power supply, power supply cable, and a JTAG emulation cable. The controller box connects to the SPARCstation via the SCSI cable.

The emulator enables the TMS320 Debugger Interface, which is sold separately, to control the C54x on the target board. This is done by interfacing the target system to the emulator via the JTAG emulation cable. The Debugger can then be used to verify the functionality of the C54x software and target hardware.

The emulators use scan-based emulation which is a nonintrusive approach to system emulation and debug. The emulator connects to a 14-pin header that must be designed into the target board. This header consists of a power signal, a clock signal, some ground signals and the 4 JTAG pins of the C54x.

Key features of the XDS510/XDS510WS include:

  • Global run/stop/breakpoint of parallel-processing DSPs
  • High-level language debugging interface
  • Software breakpoint/trace on all program and data addresses
  • Single-step execution
  • Windowed user interface similar to that of the 'C4x simulator
  • Loading/inspecting/modification of all registers and memory
  • Benchmarking of execution time of clock cycles
