JPEG (8-R8)
by SYNTECH
Software Overview
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a family of still, continuous-tone digital image data
compression. The algorithm can be applied to any source image resolution, various sampling formats,
and multidimensional color spaces.
SYNTECH's implementation on TI `C3x, `C4x is the JPEG baseline system composed of a sequential
two-dimensional DCT, quantization of coefficients, zig-zag ordering, run length, and Huffman
coding.
Different implementations are available:
• color encoder/decoder with or without interleave with sampling ratio 4:2:2.
• 256 grayscale encoder/decoder for real-time applications [up to four images (256 ¥ 256) per
second with a 60-MHz `C3x].
Features and Benefits
• Fully compliant with JPEG-8-R8 baseline specification
• Code `C' callable and VIRTUOSO compatible
• Variable compression ratios
• Support 8-, 16-, 24-bit images both grayscale and full color
Processor and System Specifications
• Memory requirement:
Encoder: 4 kword
Decoder: 6 kword
• Ready to run on DIVA's and EXPORT DSP platforms from SYNTECH
Usage Limitations or Performance Considerations
• Up to four images/second (256 ¥ 256, 256 grayscales) with a 60-MHz TMS320C3x with zero-wait-state
SRAM
Algorithm Verification
• Compliant with the JPEG 8-R8 baseline specification
Availability
• JPEG (8-R8) optimized by SYNTECH for its DSP platforms
