The addition requires a hardware adder, which is designated as the .L unit. This notation illustrates that this functional unit not only performs addition, but also other traditional ALU functions including subtraction, logical ANDs, ORs, and Exclusive-ORs.

Later we will see that the notation you might have expected, “A” is used elsewhere in the architecture.
