Case Study #4
Processor for network telephony server
Key algorithms: G.728, G.729, G.723, low level data & fax modem code
Existing design uses 16 40-MIP C5x’s
Key careabouts:
- greater performance
- lower power & cost
- smaller system size
- supporting 30 vocoder channels
Notes:
Company W is in the early processor consideration phase for a network telephony server. This particular piece of equipment performs telephony functions across a network. The key algorithms of interest for this application are vocoders like G.728, G.729, and G.723 and some low level data & fax modem code. There is interest in supporting 30 vocoder channels per system. The existing design uses sixteen 40 MIPS C5x devices. This customer would like to optimize his next generation design by achieving greater performance, lower power, lower cost, and a reduction in the size of his system. Which processor, C54x or C6x, makes the most sense for this customer?
