In some of these case studies, we have been considering only the vocoder portion of GSM. It may be more realistic to look at all the DSP algorithm requirements for an application like a pico-basestation. In this case, one full-duplex channel of, say IS-54B could require 7 MIPS for equalization (receive side), another 7 MIPS for the channel coding and decoding (receive & transmit sides), 13 MIPS for vocoder compression and decompression (VSELP for receive and transmit), and 2-4 MIPS for the echo-canceller (receive side). This equates to 3 full-duplex channels (30 MIPS each) on a 100 MIPS LC54x.
