The C542, C548, the C549 have a host port which looks like memory to a host device. It's a glueless interface to standard 8-bit processors as well as other TMS320 DSPs.

The TMS320C54x family takes advantage of TI’s advanced packaging technologies, enabling designers to generate smaller and lighter end-equipment devices, and to get greater density of functions in their design.
