Revving Up -- Race of the Fast Modems

The world's leading modem makers are racing to double the speed of
today's V.34 devices in their quest for a 56-kbit-per-second connection,
but the new technology raises nearly as many questions as hopes. At a
time when most of the industry is camped around the Internet's World
Wide Wait, a doubling of data rates could be a huge windfall for Netizens,
especially since some believe the speed boost could be delivered nearly
free as a software upgrade.

TI Ready With 'x2' DSP Chip Set

Dallas - Texas Instruments Inc. has its "x2" DSP chip set for 56 Kbit/s
modems ready for the market, and U.S. Robotics Inc. is expected to have
the next-generation boxes based on the TI chip set on retail shelves this
month.
