	    Pascal Workstation 3.21 Performance Report
	    ==========================================

Revision 3.21 has only 1 purpose: support CATSEYE (98458A, 98549A,
98550A) display hardware. Only two areas of the system changed in 3.21:
a new CRT alpha driver (CRTE) for CATSEYE was added (and another driver
modified very slightly to fix a bug), and DGL was enhanced to support
CATSEYE.

The CRTE driver performs from 2 to 3 times faster for typical operations
(e.g. EDIT a large file) than its nearest relative, the TOPCAT driver.
This is due mostly to a number of design changes in the driver compared
to the TOPCAT driver, and partly to intrinsic hardware speed advantages
of the CATSEYE over TOPCAT. No case has been observed in which
performance is worse than TOPCAT, although no formal benchmarks were done.

DGL experienced no noticeable speed gain or loss compared to TOPCAT;
this is expected, as the TOPCAT driver of DGL was extended to cover
CATSEYE, and no design changes were attempted. Operations in which
CATSEYE is potentially faster are probably swamped by CPU and floating
point operations, reducing CATSEYE hardware speed advantage
considerably.

We feel the CATSEYE alpha speed to be a feature the customer will
notice, and one that will increase confidence in ongoing PAWS support.
